Well, what to say…

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007

I refuse to close down. :) I know, no one’s reading anymore. I don’t blame you. But hey, this can still be my own private place, right? ;)

Let’s see…. stuff’s going well at the job (LOVING working at Mailrite), I’m seeing Matt less and less but there’s not really much I can do about it :( , and… yeah. Just trying to keep trucking!

Lots of interesting things have been happening in the tech world lately. I installed the latest release of Ubuntu on a laptop, then gave it to Mom & Dad, so they can finally have a computer. Mom’s LOVING it. :D And I gotta say, if you’re interested in Linux, 7.10 is QUITE the release. VERY easy to get up and running.

Really looking forward to the next release of the OpenMoko platform. I can’t afford a cellphone right now, but when I can, BOY do I know what I’m getting. :)

Not gonna get my hopes up, but I’m currently talking to a girl on myspace, we’ll see where that goes (wish me luck! I always had a crush on her in highschool).

I’m done stressing over Deanna, just too painful. If she ever wants to show that she can really pull things off, and I’m single then, maybe. But she was VERY hurtful, so I don’t even know (might be worth it, just for Matt’s sake though).

Currently working on the company website. The current one (www.mailritevt.com) sucks. Well, it sucks now. Hopefully, in not too long, mine will be at that address :D .

Usual Slashdot activity, trolling for news :D . Oh, and I’m trying to get OFF featured on Security Now, but not much luck yet. :(

Anyway, I’ll try to update a little more often (once ever six months or so is a little dry lol). Anyway, ’till next time, dear reader (if you’re even still there)!

P.S.: Play Portal! :D

I’m not dead! Just nearly!

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Ok, how long has it been now? About a month and a half, right? Boy, am I sorry. However, I’m even sorrier to say it’s possibly going to be as much as another month ’till I can post again. See, I’m putting in A LOT of hours at the bakery, as we are short a manager there (even though my boss promised me that when we lost the first manager I would not be put in his place). So that doesn’t leave a lot of time for blogging, sadly. On the up side, I’ve made a lot of progress in other areas. As I mentioned in a previous post I’ve now made a nearly full move to Linux (Ubuntu Dapper Drake, to be precise). I only reboot to Windows to re-sync my iPod, and I’m nearly done with that once I get a couple of kinks with amaroK worked out. Now, let me tell you - if you’re not a hardcore gamer (a lot of games work on Linux, but not all), Linux can be a dream. I’ve got XGL and Compiz running, and it puts Vista to shame for eye candy.

XGL and Compiz

I’ve got plenty of good programs in the form of open source stuff, and best? It’s all free. What do you all think about Linux? Has anyone else here tried it, and what kind of success did you have?

Ok, that’s it for now. I’ll post back ASAP. Thanks!

DEF CON: Wall of Sheep…

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

This is the COOLEST demonstration of how lax security is for many people. It’s a display at DEF CON that updates in real time as people check their email, or log into myspace (as you can see from the bottom of the pic) or what ever. If it’s not secured (I’d assume one way is to make sure you’re logging into an https:// secured site), then it should show up there.

Wall of Sheep @ DEF CON

Now tell me: How stupid would you feel appearing on that wall? :D I’m just supprised. It’s the biggest hacker convention around (or at least the most well known), these are the people who made the shirts that say “I read your email”, and STILL people log in unsecured. I’m just shocked.

If any of you out there ever go to DEF CON, and you have two computers, install Hamachi on both, leave one at home, turned on and connected to the internet, and take the other with you. You can then remote desktop into the one at home through Hamachi, and then surf securely knowing that everything going from you at DEF CON to your home is MASSIVLY encrypted.

For more information on security in general, may I suggest the ever popular podcast Security Now!

Thanks to ZDNet for the original pic, and the story.

And of course, feel free to Digg the Story

Dude, I’m getting a Mac! Er, Dell! Er, wait. Never mind…

:

Wow. I had a CLOSE call. It’s a good thing I don’t have a credit card, or my girlfriend would KILL me. See, we were at the Mac store, getting her an iPod mini(she’s been wanting one FOREVER, and after seeing the auto-load-podcast feature of iPod and iTunes, I want one SO BAD myself), and I saw it: It was a little white box, no wider then the lenght of my fingers spread out.

The Mac mini.

The Mac mini

Yeah. That thing ROCKS. It’s so CUTE, and at under $500 bucks, it’s not too pricy, either. I WANT ONE BAD!!!!! And Tiger is SUCH a pretty OS, I can’t begin to explain it if you’ve never used it before. I WANT ONE MOMMY!!! Heck, I could even dual boot in it from Linux. MAN, would that be sweet.

Of course, while we’re on the subject of Linux, I’ve got a crappy old x86 500 MHz with 64 MB of ram sitting idle right now (someone was throwing it out on trash day and I snagged it). Any suggestions from my readers on a distro that makes a good server?

Oh, and another question: I REALLY want an iPod to listen to podcasts (I’m sadly a bit of an addict). Should I just get a cheapo iPod Shuffle on eBay? Or do you think I should get a save for a few months & get a mini? Or REALLY save and get an iPod 60 Gig?

Any thoughts at all on this?

Thanks for reading and writing, gang!

EDIT: Decided to give Mandrake, or Mandriva, or what ever you call it a shot. I’ve got 10.1 community version booting on my craputer right now. Can’t wait to see how it performs.

Bounty Hunting Code Warriors, UNITE!

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

:

Well, this is a neat little tidbit: I’m sure you all have heard of the DS Linux Project, er, rather I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before. :D Well, now someone has gone and started another community based project. Long has it been said that we need a TCP/IP Stack, and now someone has started a bounty for just that thing.

Indeed, if you are intrested in donating, you can just go on over to The DS Wi-Fi Bounty and drop a dime or two hundred.

Or, if you’ve the chops, here’s the current rules:

1: The implementation may not contain code from the SDK or any illegal source. If such a source is suspected, you will be immediately disqualified and will not be eligible for any later bounties from StoneCypher.

2: The implementation must compile in a free compiler (preferably GCC.)

3: It is acceptable for the implementation to use existing libraries, provided that their licenses are non-contaminating (BSD license, MIT license, LGPL are fine; GPL and MPL are not.) To that end, it is recommended that the TCP/IP Stack List be briefly perused. Remember, commercial stacks cannot be used without written special dispensation from their vendors.

Also, bear in mind that there are three different bountys:

1: Figuring out the register set to accomplish (specific list)
2: Implementing correct connect/disconnect code and implementing correct send/recieve code, each of which works both with DSes and PCs
3: Bootstrapping TCP/IP (or, icky, UDP/IP)

At any rate, get out there, and GET CODEING! The bounty total is currently up to 2000 bucks plus! Wish I knew more C++… :D

Thanks for reading!
